Grup Servicii Petroliere (GSP) is announcing the successful arrival of the Jupiter drilling rig from Rijeka – Croatia, back to the mother harbour in Constanta Port, berth 34, Romania, for the last stage of the upgrading process. Jupiter has spent the past eight months in Rijeka’s shipyard in order to be rebuilt.

MODU Jupiter left Rijeka harbour, Croatia, on the 18th of July 2007 at 3:30 pm. The rig arrived in Constanta Port yesterday, the 8th of August at noon time.

During the transport operation, the rig was towed by the Class 1, DPS 2 multipurpose vessel Active King. GSP’s offshore support vessel already took part in numerous operations of this size and importance, the entire crew benefiting from past experience. For the safety of the entire operation, Jupiter drilling rig was assisted also by the towing boat Alexander 5.

Jupiter has travelled the 1320 marine miles distance in the shortest time – only 21 days – considering the complexity of the operation and the meteorological conditions during the transportation. During their voyage, the rig and its towing boats have crossed the Adriatic, the Ionic, The Egeean, the Marmara, and the Black Sea, and also the Dardanele and Bosphorus straights.

Some of the most important of the upgrading works undertaken in Rijeka Shipyard were:

• the transformation of the rig from “slot in” type to „cantilever” type;

• the Ward Leonard system was changed with the SCR system, and the main engines were changed with Caterpillar engines with highly improved performances;

• the third mud pump was installed and the maximum work pressure of the 3 mud pumps has been increased from 5000 psi (350 bar) to 7500 psi (520 bar);

• the mud cleaning system has been modified, a mud cleaner, a shake out mud machine with variable produced by Brandt company have been installed.

More modernization works will be undertaken on MODU Jupiter in Berth 34 of the Constanta Port. The drilling rig will be reclassified under ABS register. At the completion of the upgrading process and the reclassification, Jupiter drilling rig will operate in the Black Sea under contract with Petrom, member of OMV.
